The Mombasa-Mtwapa (A7) Road Project is an important transnational transportation hub project in East Africa.

During the construction process, facing multiple challenges such as ecological sensitivity, community relations, and cultural heritage protection, the project actively integrated ESG concepts into the entire project cycle, forming a replicable and promotable “ecological-community-governance” triple sustainable construction model.

In terms of environmental protection, the project effectively protected the nesting habitats of sea turtles. By setting up ecological buffer zones, vegetation restoration, and sewage waste management system, the impact on marine ecology was significantly reduced.

As for social responsibility, the project established a four-party linkage mechanism of “government, owner, community and contractor”, giving priority to hiring local workers, creating more than 600 job opportunities, with employee income levels 30% higher than the local average. And it actively participated in community livelihood projects, leading the reconstruction and expansion of Kongovea market, effectively improving people's livelihoods, while properly handling the protection of the century old bell.

In terms of governance mechanism, the project established an ESG oriented supply chain management system, strictly implemented international compliance and anti bribery standards, established a full process electronic ledger and independent reporting channel, and comprehensively improved the transparency and integrity of the project.

This project not only significantly enhances regional transportation capacity and supports economic development, but also demonstrates the high-level comprehensive ability of Chinese enterprises to fulfill social responsibilities and promote sustainable development overseas.

Its successful practice has provided valuable experience for Chinese enterprises, especially infrastructure companies, to carry out ESG management for overseas projects.

At the Expo Osaka 2025, Fang Zheng attended the “High end Forum on Sustainable Trust Dialogue” and the “Conference on ESG Best Practice for Enterprise Internationalization”. Focusing on the group’s sustainable development and compliance management practices in infrastructure construction, taking the ESG Mombasa-Mtwapa (A7) Road Project as a case, he shared the group's innovative path in deep integration of ESG governance and overseas project management.

He elaborated on how to embed ESG standards into the full cycle project management of the project, realizing the dual empowerment of project management and sustainable development through innovative protection of ecological diversity, joint construction of community welfare, strict compliance and clean governance, which sparked in-depth discussions and positive responses from all participants regarding the systematic implementation of ESG strategies by Chinese enterprises.

The Conference on ESG Best Practice for Enterprise Internationalization aims to promote the strategic transformation of Chinese enterprises from “going global” to “co-construction”, align with international ESG standards, and tell ESG stories of Chinese enterprises well.

The inclusion of Mombasa-Mtwapa (A7) Road Project brings the ESG practices of Chinese enterprises into the international spotlight and contributes Chinese solutions to global sustainable development.
