Obigarm-Tagikamar Road Section completed
The Obigarm-Tagikamar Road Section amid the undulating mountains of Tajikistan was completed on time for the hard work of the team from Hunan Road & Bridge Construction Group (HNRB), which overcame many difficulties during the construction period such as severe cold, the pandemic, and the turbulent international situation.
The winter in Tajikistan is cold and long, with the lowest temperature reaching minus 20 ℃. It makes mechanical equipment difficult to start working and doubles the solidification time of concrete. Besides, ice and snow make material transportation dangerous. All these posed great challenges during the construction of the road. Faced with these adverse conditions, the project team developed an innovative construction plan. They built a closed enclosure at the tunnel entrance and used heat blowers to stabilize the temperature inside the tunnel and ensure the smooth construction.
“The measuring instruments were almost frozen, and my hands and feet were numb on cold nights, but every data had to be accurate,” said a tunnel surveyor. Despite the piercing wind, the team still stuck to their posts and strictly controlled every detail to ensure the quality of the project. This persistence and professional spirit became the cornerstone of the high-quality project.
The outbreak of the global epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict seriously hindered the international logistics chain and upgraded the border control of Tajikistan, so many key construction materials such as steel, cement, and concrete admixtures couldn’t arrive on time, which affected the construction progress.
Faced with this series of challenges, the project team reached out to domestic suppliers and optimized transportation plans to ensure material supply as much as possible. Meanwhile, they explored procurement channels locally, searched for alternative materials, and adjusted construction processes to reduce the impact of supply chain disruptions. These measures enabled the construction to proceed steadily and ensured the progress of the project.
After four years of hard work, the Obigarm-Tagikamar Road Section was successfully completed. It improves the local transportation conditions and brings new opportunities for the economic development in the surrounding areas.
The project has won the National Road Development Achievement Award in Tajikistan. The Prime Minister of Tajikistan visited it three times and paid close attention to its progress. In January 2025, Ji Shumin, Chinese ambassador to Tajikistan inspected the project and highly praised the hard work of the project team.
The project is considered not just a road, but the result of the project team’s hard work. It connects the city and the countryside, carries the team’s perseverance, and witnesses their spirit of never backing down in the face of complex challenges.
The Obigarm-Tagikamar Road Section project in Tajikistan is an important part of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Corridor. The road section constructed by HNRB is 30.1 kilometers long, with a construction period of 1,200 days.
